The Cohen Deck Project is a true community-inspired effort that combines social dining with the health benefits of being outside. The structure, on the community center’s east facing side, will overlook bucolic rolling fields, where people will enjoy breathtaking sunrises or experience the warmth of the mid-day sun while socializing during lunch. Construction is expected to commence in spring 2023 and be completed during the summer.
The $200,000 expected cost is being funded through a capital campaign and donations.
Construction will include shade canopies, landscaping, and a handicap accessible ramp. The completed project will add space for about 100 additional diners, increasing services offered at the center by approximately seventy-two percent. Existing programs such as Adult Day, or special interest groups like the Cohen Knitting Club, will also be able to expand their programs to utilize the new space, engaging their participants while enjoying the health benefits of spending time outside.
Research shows outside time improves concentration and creativity, especially among older adults. According to a 2017 report from Elder Care Alliance, the act of being outside does more than just lift your spirits -- it also provides a boost for physical and mental wellbeing. One study found a 20-percent improvement in attention span and memory after spending just one hour in a natural environment.
The Deck Project has the potential to drive capacity and increase awareness of Spectrum Generations as a community hub, while providing a plethora of health benefits. According to Spectrum Generation’s President and CEO, Gerard Queally,
